Erkens, David Hendrik

Research Area Director of Service Excellence
Prof. David Hendrik Erkens is Professor of Accounting and Research Area Director of Service Excellence at CEIBS. Prior to joining CEIBS, he was a tenured Associate Professor of Accounting at McDonough School of Business, Georgetown University. He earned his Ph.D. in Business Administration from Arizona State University and his MSc in International Management from Maastricht University.
His research focuses on the design, implementation, and use of control systems, particularly compensation arrangements, boards of directors, and operational controls. His more recent research interest focuses on how firms can use artificial intelligence to achieve greater control over business processes.
Prof. Erkens’ papers have been published in leading academic journals, including Journal of Accounting Research, The Accounting Review, Management Science, and Journal of Corporate Finance. His research has been covered by the press, such as Agenda, CFO Magazine, and The Economist; and has informed policy-makers such as the European Commission.
Prof. Erkens received various research awards, including AAA FARS Best Discussant Award in 2017; Best Paper Award AAA Management Accounting Section Mid-Year Meeting: 2007 and 2015; and AAA Management Accounting Section Best Early-Career Researcher Award in 2013.
Prior to joining CEIBS Prof. Erkens has taught undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral courses in management accounting at Georgetown University and the University of Southern California.
